Electrolyte replenishment

Postby PSU23 on Tue Apr 14, 2009 6:45 pm

Trust me, I am not here to try to sell anyone anything, what I have discovered is amazing and worth sharing...

Having a background in Exercise Phys, I have read numerous articles on electrolyte replenishment, proper hydration etc. The problem with the products on the market today is that when absorbed through the GI tract, only about 40-50% are being utilized. Unfortunately, this is the method almost all replenishment drinks/gels offer!

Until now...

Recently I was introduced to a new revolutionary product called Enlyten. This company distributes electrolytes, melatonin, energy and antioxidants through a strip that dissolves in your mouth. These strips are very similar to breath strips but are much more effective. By distributing the electrolytes through the mouth 80-90% of the electrolytes are absorbed into the blood stream within 2-3 minutes! When compared to other products on the market, the amount of electrolytes being delivered exceeds all!

I have used the product several times and have yet to cramp! If anyone is interested in obtaining more information on this product I would love to share the info with you. Or you can find more info @

I have never believed in a product more than what I have researched on this! Feel free to contact me if you would like to try some samples: I will also bring some on the Saturday rides!!!

Not trying to sell?

Postby LongRider on Thu Apr 23, 2009 12:28 am

So you aren't trying to sell anything, but you have your own private page on the vendor's site? Yeah, right.

Assuming any of these claims are true, it would be the % absorption that would be higher, not the absolute amount.

Who cares? It's not like my electrolytes weight 10 lbs and are difficult to dispense. So I need to mix more electrolyte into my Gatorade, so what? Why not just use capsules, like Hammer Endurolytes? The last thing I need is some silly breath strip type dispenser I have to find a place for on my bike. No NBA timeouts on a bike.

This is a solution in search of a problem!

The name "Longrider" alone tells me that you are much more capable on a bike than I, but I thought I would share my own experience after riding with Joel this past weekend. First, while Joel did mention the product to me and the others on our ride, it was more a matter of sharing something new than it was trying sell anything. I tried one, as did several others, and thought the concept was actually fairly smart. You might want to take some time to compare some of the details of the different approaches to electrolyte replacement, as well as the byproducts you ingest with other methods. I'm certainly no expert, but based on what I'm reading, Enlyten's approach has some merit and is worth considering as one of many options available. Your Gatorade approach is certainly another.

Frankly, it's not directly related to this, but as an example I thought "the patch" approach to taking medication was absolutely bogus. Since then, that technology has done nothing but improve and grow in terms of usage. When I consider this, I'm a bit more willing to actually look at the details and technology behind Enlyten.

By the way, I'm not involved in selling Enlyten. But it is intriguing to me.

Reading labels

Postby LongRider on Sat Apr 25, 2009 2:42 pm

I looked at the labels. This method of dispensing has so little volume it is incapable of providing significant amounts of anything. The only reason the B12 amount looks impressive is because it's only required in MICRO-gram doses.

http://img.exigo.com/public/1629/websit ... _sheet.pdf

Please note that the "serving" is for 6 strips, and there are only 3.5 servings in the whole cassette. For comparison...

Powerbars have 100% of B and C vitamins AND almost as much sodium as an entire cassette of this stuff. A single Power Eloctrolytes foil stick has more sodium than one of these cassettes, and it actually has potassium to balance out that sodium, as well as magnesium.

A well-thought out nutrition system isn't filled with lots of extra doo-dads you have to find a place for on your bike, and a reminder for in your schedule, it is integrated so that the act of drinking your hydration also provides your nutrition.

Store in a cool, dry place? On a bike? Are you kidding me? How about 100+ degrees and soaked in sweat and waterbottle leakage?

This dispenser system is incapable of delivering anything in sufficient quantities, period, and especially not anything already found in most people's existing nutritional protocols. It's a gimmic.

If you want quality antioxidants beyond vitamin C, mix some Zola Acai berry juice with only about 80 calories into your hydration mix and dilute to keep sugar concentrations below 8% to avoid excessive osmotic pressures. To replace the now diluted electrolyte concentration just pour in a Power Electrolytes foil and shake well. Better yet, just use the new Gatorade Endurance formula with about 3X the normal electrolytes.

If you read some labels you won't be taken in by such weak ideas. I've clearly looked into the details, have you?

Longrider,

It's been too long since I had the chance to respond to your attacks and misinformation on enlyten. I have been informed and have done the research but until you actually try the product your testimony has very little validity.

You try to compare enlyten to other products on the market that you claim are better. The fact remains that enlyten has been proven to provide the most effective means of distribution into the body available...through the lining of your cheek and mouth. This method has been proven to provide 80-90% absorption vs. your 30-40% of endurolyte, gatorade or other products. As a matter of fact, because enlyten products contain no sugar or carbohydrates they do not minimize the hydration rate like other sugar products (gatorade). For example, 1 serving of enlyten provides 70mg of sodium which nets a minimum of 56-63mg into the system within 2-3 minutes. A serving of endurolytes provides 40mg of sodium resulting in a net of 12-16mg abosorbed within 30-40 minutes of digestion...wow, your way seems much more effective!

Your claim that other products have more sodium and other electrolytes listed in the ingredients is true...the key to understanding these amounts are two fold:
1. Your body will only absorb 30-40% through the GI tract where as enlyten will distribute 80-90% because it is through the lining of your mouth.
2. The way to fulfill sodium requirements is not by indiscriminate consumption of salty foods or salt tablets, but rather with a lower-sodium approach that emphasizes a balance of essential minerals that cooperatively enhance the body's natural hormone and enzyme actions. You want a product that contains a moderate supply of sodium, one that will provide necessary electrolyte support without compromising internal regulation.

Without going into too much detail, cramping is the body's way of telling you that it has inefficient levels of electrolytes. The product consumption that you preach is a waste of money because you are excreting way more than you are absorbing! Your body does not need the excess sodium and other ingredients that your product claims to provide.

Endurolytes recommends taking 12 capsules when the exercise is over 2hrs. long???? That equates to over 480 mg. of sodium during a 2 hr period! An athlete only requires 500mg PER DAY! As Americans we consume nearly 4000mg per day! I'll tell you what, while you are taking those 12 pills, I'll take my 6 strips (3 strips 10 minutes before the ride and 3 strips 1hr into the ride) and we'll see which is easier to consume while providing the necessary electrolytes to function and hydrate properly! And yes, the cassettes are very small and fit in a jersey pocket better than a baggie of powder or 12 pills! Believe it or not, they even hold up in 100 degree temperatures and rainstorms because they are enclosed in a plastic case!

Whatever product you choose to use is a personal decision. I just find it ironic that you can criticize a product that has a clearly more effective delivery system, is easier to consume without causing bloating, provides the necessary electrolytes, is more cost effective and tastes better without ever having tried the product! Your claims are unfounded and misguided.

Next time you choose to criticize a product...do the research...you will probably be amazed at how much you might learn! Enlyten is a more effective delivery system...that cannot be refuted!

I'll keep my eye out for gimmicks...if I see one I'll make sure I let you know.

In the meantime, if you would like to try the product and learn first hand what the buzz is all about, let me know...it might change the way you think!

You carefully avoid the unpleasant truth that a serving is 6 strips, and there aren't even 4 servings in a cassette. Beyond that, the CLAIMED efficiency gains don't come close to offsetting the tiny quantities this system is capable of delivering.

Whether here, on the product website, or the Bicycle Mag article, there is ZIERO, ZIP, NADA, scientific study, such as a double blind test, to back up any of your ridiculous claims. Instead, you and your company rely entirely on pseudo scientific claims "backed up" by user testimonials. If those were reliable the concept of blind testing would never have developed. All of your competitors products have met such testing standards. You have NOT.

For anyone with the capacity for critical thought, and a little knowledge, your claims will be seen for what they are, a shoddy pile of unsubstantiated claims and carefully worded half-truths. Fortunately, the members here have enough real-world experience with hydration products they are very unlikely to fall prey to such pathetic tactics, so I am less concerned than annoyed at your shameless attempt to use this resource for personal and commercial gain.

Far from your claim that "your aren't trying to sell us anything", this is nothing but the misappropriation of a free resource for your commercial gain.

Longrider,

I believe Steve Martin made famous the line "criticize things you don't know about" but until you actually try the product it is hard to listen to you. As previously stated, I am not here for "commercial gain". I asked for permission to post this product on this site before the first post was ever written. There are others in this group who have tried and liked this product yet I have never "pushed" for them to buy into it...as a matter of fact, I have never even sold any to anyone in this group! I studied this type of product 25 years ago before the technology existed to be effective. Back then one of the founding members of the American College of Sports Medicine preached that if there was ever a product available that could be absorbed through the linings of the mouth it would benefit the sports world tremendously. Unfortunately he died before he saw his claims come to fruition. Duke has studied the product and has documentation on the effectiveness of this product. West Point used this product and reduced the I.V. use of their football team to 0% during 2 a days. The scientific data is there!

The beauty of the product is that you can regulate the amount absorbed to meet the needs of the individual. Why pop 12 pills when only 3 strips maybe needed. I did the Tour de Cure 100 mile ride on 9 strips and water along with a few fig newtons. No cramping!

Like I said before, let me know if you would like to try the product before you criticize it!
