Cycling Shoes?

Postby jnshapiro on Fri May 02, 2008 8:02 pm

First off, I'm new here. Just started riding again after about an 8 year break. Last big ride I did was the Seagull Century on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I finished that ride (my wife and I did it in about 4 1/2 hours), but my knees and hips were in bad shape on account of several injuries I suffered in my younger days. We moved here a few years back.

Anyway, on to my question.

I have a pair of Sidi Genius 5 shoes. They fit well when I bought them, but lately I've been getting numb toes after only 15 miles. I busted up a foot pretty good in a rock climbing fall in '90. My foot didn't heal right and changes shape. These shoes don't fit so well anymore.

Is there a shop in the greater Sac area (I'm in Rancho) that has a good shoe/fit person? I'd like to either get these fit properly (footbeds or some such) or get the right pair of shoes. Just looking for help.

Thanks!

Shoes

Joel,

Welcome to the area, and thanks for stopping by Cycle Folsom's forum. Perhaps you'll come out and join us for a ride. If you're interested, send me an email and I'll make sure you get the ride announcements: steve@cyclefolsom.com

Now, about your question. I also ride in SIDI shoes (mega version - because my feet are wide). My toes started to hurt after of year or so in the same shoes. I tried a couple brands of new soles (replacing the originals) and found that Specialized brand made my shoes feel just like they were new - actually, even better than new. It's less expensive option, especially if your shoes are still in good shape.

I bought them at Bicycles Plus in Folsom and have been riding with the new sole insertes since December of 2007. They are still performing quite nicely and saved me $150 that I didn't have to spend on new shoes.

Thanks Steve. E-mail pending.

I have an appt at Bicycles Plus tomorrow morning for a fit. It's quite possible my cleats are in the wrong place. I also noticed that my feet don't rest flat on the pedals. I'm pedaling on the outside of my feet. That's likely contributing.

I'm hoping that correctly positioning the cleats, and perhaps shimming them so my feet hit the pedals correctly will fix it.

Thanks for the suggestion.
